AstroCompass

Privacy policy

This is the 25 September 2026 version, kept for testers on beta builds before version 1.0.0. The current privacy policy is here.

Dead Reckoning Studio LLC · Published 22 September 2026 · Updated 25 September 2026 · In effect from Apple's approval of the AstroCompass build that links to it (and from Stripe's approval where a website payment applies) · AstroCompass for iPhone and astrocompass.app

AstroCompass has no accounts and does not ask who you are. The only information the app itself sends us is optional diagnostics, filed under a random install code. Apple passes us purchase information when you buy something, and we receive whatever you choose to email us. This page says what the diagnostics are, when they are sent, how long we keep them, and how to delete them.

What we collect, and only if you turn it on

Diagnostics are off until you choose to share them. When on, the app sends us a session journal: the install code, app build, iOS version, device model, time zone, a rough location rounded to about 1 km, and which features were used, including any errors or feature failures. It does not include your name, contacts, other apps, your photo library, or what you type.

A Sky Lock bundle adds the night-sky camera frames from one attempt, their exposure settings, and a short technical summary. Frames carry no photo metadata. In the App Store release, frames are sent only when you choose to send a failed attempt to us for troubleshooting; the app shows you the frames first. In the TestFlight beta, sharing diagnostics includes the frames from each attempt.

How we use it

To find and fix problems in the app, especially Sky Lock failures we could not otherwise see. Nothing else. We do not sell personal data or use it for advertising.

Who sees it

Diagnostics go over an encrypted connection to private storage owned by Dead Reckoning Studio LLC in the United States. Only the studio, and the service providers working for us, can read them. We use service providers that host, transmit, secure or analyze diagnostics on our behalf; each is bound to protect your information at least as this policy does. Apple separately handles the App Store, TestFlight, purchases and notifications under its own terms.

How long we keep it

Shared diagnostics expire automatically 90 days after upload. Copies we download for analysis are deleted on the same schedule. A capture kept as a test case for a fix is deleted, with everything associated with it, once the verified fix has shipped.

Your choices

Turn it off: Settings ▸ Privacy. Turning diagnostics off stops recording and sending and discards anything not yet sent. It does not delete what was already uploaded.

Delete it: Settings ▸ Privacy ▸ Delete uploaded diagnostics removes everything filed under your install code from our storage. Copies we had downloaded for analysis go on the 90-day schedule, or sooner if you ask. Or email support@astrocompass.app with the install code shown on that screen, and we will delete it within 30 days and confirm.

Diagnostics are pseudonymous. The only way we can connect the install code to a person is if you send it to us, for example when you email support.

Children and families

AstroCompass is for a general audience and is not directed to children under 13. It has no accounts and never asks for a name, email address or contact details. Diagnostics are off until someone chooses on the device, and a parent or guardian can leave them off or switch them off in Settings ▸ Privacy. If we learn that diagnostics came from a child's device without a parent's consent, we delete them.

Purchases

Subscriptions and in-app tips are processed by Apple. We never receive your card or account details, only the transaction information needed to provide and support what you bought. Our websites may link to Stripe for other purchases or to support the studio; Stripe processes those under its own terms.

Security

We use reasonable technical and organizational safeguards designed to protect your information. No storage or transmission system can be guaranteed completely secure.

This website

astrocompass.app is a static site served by Cloudflare. We set no cookies. We use Cloudflare Web Analytics to count page views and see which pages people read; it stores nothing on your device and does not fingerprint you, so we see totals, not visitors. Cloudflare may also set strictly necessary security cookies and log requests under its own policy. Support email is routed to a Gmail mailbox and read by the studio.

Your rights

Wherever you live, you can ask what we currently hold for your install code, have it deleted, or withdraw consent by turning diagnostics off. Because diagnostics carry no name, we act on the install code you give us.

Changes

If this policy changes in a way that matters, the effective date above changes and the app shows the new version before anything new is collected.
